Short Description:
Following the great success of the first volume in this series, The Silent Service Remembers (Vol. I), many more submarine veterans of the Cold War era asked to have their stories similarly told in their own words, to preserve their unique and largely unknown experiences for future generations. Like the first volume, these unique stories offer a wide range of perspectives aboard submarines and the various ports of call.
Variably offbeat and serious, but always informative, the stories in this collection will give the reader a deeper understanding and appreciation for the dedication, sacrifice, and mettle it took to volunteer and serve on submarines. As in the first volume, plenty of vintage photographs add to the reading pleasure.
Away from home port for a good part of the year, coupled with the stress of 24/7 potential calamities that could strike at any moment, these stories from both officers and enlisted paint the true picture of life aboard a ship sometimes described as “a steel tube designed to sink.” You will be moved, you will laugh, and most importantly you will gain insight into the seldom-seen world of submarines as you uncover every man’s stories.
Long Description:
The Silent Service Remembers (Vol. 2) is our fifth effort in the ever-expanding series of books that seek to capture the essence of the US Submarine Force. Featuring the stories, reminisces, and photographs of 26 authors, the volume represents the sequel to the first volume published in 2020 to nearly exclusively five-star reviews on Amazon.
Inside this book, the many tales will make you laugh, cry, shake your head, and ponder. Along the way, you will learn a little about the core foundations of this proud group of intrepid sailors who volunteered to serve aboard submarines in the defense of the United States.
Painstakingly assembled over a year’s time with great care, and featuring a handsome layout that is easy on the eyes, The Silent Service Remembers (Vol. 2) is the perfect read for the submarine veteran or aficionado. At nearly 650 pages in length and containing over 150 vintage photos with captions, this volume will entertain and enlighten the reader for many hours.
The authors recognized in 2017 that there was a general lack of submarine books that could appeal to both the old salt and the novice reader. All of the titles in this series are clearly written and carefully vetted by dozens of submarine veterans for accuracy. Moreover, the books collectively aspire to convey a real sense of the hopes, fears, and motivations of the men (and now women) who call themselves submariners.

Another Great Submarine Book!
I devoured this book, completing it in three days. This book, the second in a series of three chronicles the experiences of submariners from World War 2 through the Cold War and beyond. As a Cold War era diesel submarine officer it was of particular interest to me. That said I suspect those with no connection to submarines, or the military at all for that matter, would find it fascinating. There is some military jargon but the authors took great care to decipher it for those without a military background.
The book is not an expose of classified missions, although some are alluded to, but a compilation of the experiences of individual submariners, each with his own chapter. Some chapters were written by the submariners and others are the product of interviews by the authors. Both approaches are extremely informative and provide a peak into the challenges that the submariners confronted during their Navy careers. The stories are uplifting and should make the reader appreciate the sacrifices made by this elite brotherhood of American sailors.
The beauty of this book is that each chapter stands alone so one can read as much or as little he chooses. I highly recommend this book. You won’t be disappointed.

If you want to get a great idea of what submarines and submarines do read this book. The narratives are a cross section of officer and enlisted submarines that "tell it like it was and, more likely, is" serving on submarines. Read and enjoy this book.
