About the Book:
Short Description:
Over the 123-year history of the US Submarine Force, there are many stories that could be told. Many of these are in our previous 7 books. We are given many leads and tips on stories that submarine veterans themselves think are worthy to preserve for posterity. From all these tips, we have selected some that stand out – either because of their uniqueness, or the topic, or because they are just good stories – for inclusion in Sub Tales 4. From the Bozo the Sea dog, to the unique story of Adm Charles Longwood (Uncle Charlie to WWII submariners), to the story of the lost Albacore bell and how it was found and fittingly used in a ceremony to remember all lost service members, and a lot more – these stories will inform you, educate you on the unique Bond that submariners share, and once more, show the traits of honor, courage, and sacrifice that are the hallmark of those who proudly wear the Dolphins, a pin signifying that they are “Qualified in Submarines”.
Long Description:
In our other books, we never captured the stories of the families the loved ones left behind, as their husbands and fathers went to sea on submarines. Sub Tales 4 captures these, with one from Bruce Harvey, the son of CDR Wes Harvey, USN, who was the Captain of the USS Thresher (SSN 593) that sank with 129 hands aboard on 10 April 1963. This loss stunned the Navy and the nation. Read Bruce’s recollection. Adm Charles Longwood was a pivotal figure for the US Submarine Force in WWII. He personally met every boat when they returned to Pearl Harbor after a war patrol. Uncle Charlie as he was affectionately referred to, was a man of action. Read his story, and his vital connection to Operation Barney, the details of which are covered in another story. Read about the Lancetfish, the boat with the shortest stint as an active ship in the US Navy. You have heard about deep diving submersibles before, but have you heard of the Triple Nickel, the USS Dolphin (SSN 555) and its adventures? Read as 3 submarine sailors try to describe the unique Bond that binds them together for life. Some touching stories there. This a lot more await you in Sub Tales 4. You will not be disappointed but lifted up. Surface, Surface, Surface.
